Unlike the centralized Coinbase exchange, the extension stores your keys locally on your device, meaning you alone are responsible for securing your recovery phrase and password. This distinction is fundamental: Coinbase.com is a brokerage that holds your crypto for you, while Coinbase Wallet is a tool that lets you interact with decentralized applications, DeFi protocols, and NFT marketplaces across multiple blockchain networks. Getting Started and Setup To begin, you install the extension from the Chrome Web Store. The extension is compatible with Chrome and Brave browsers. Once installed, you have two options: create a new wallet or import an existing one. When creating a new wallet, you will be prompted to choose a username, which other Coinbase Wallet users can use to find you and send crypto. It is important to note that this username cannot be changed later. After setting the username, the extension generates a 12-word recovery phrase. This phrase is the master key to your wallet; if you lose it, you lose access to your funds permanently, and Coinbase cannot recover it for you. You must write it down and store it securely offline. Finally, you create a password for accessing the wallet on your device. This password is provider-specific and will not transfer if you import your recovery phrase elsewhere. If you already use another wallet like MetaMask or Trust Wallet, you can import it into Coinbase Wallet Extension using your existing 12-word recovery phrase. The process involves revealing the recovery phrase in your current wallet’s settings, then selecting “Import an existing wallet” in the Coinbase extension and entering the phrase. Your assets and transaction history will appear in the new interface. What You Can Do with the Extension The Coinbase Wallet Extension serves as a gateway to Web3. It supports Ethereum and all EVM-compatible networks, including Avalanche, Polygon, and BNB Chain, as well as Solana and SPL tokens. This multi-chain support means you can connect to thousands of decentralized applications, trade tokens on decentralized exchanges, manage NFT collections, and explore DeFi protocols for yield opportunities. For users who hold crypto on the centralized Coinbase exchange, the extension offers a direct connection feature. By linking your Coinbase account, you can transfer assets from your exchange balance to your self-custody wallet without manually copying addresses. This simplifies the process of moving funds into the decentralized ecosystem. Security Considerations and Recent Changes Because Coinbase Wallet is self-custodial, security practices differ from exchange-based accounts. The recovery phrase should never be shared or entered into any website. The extension also supports connections to hardware wallets like Ledger, allowing you to add an extra layer of protection by requiring physical confirmation for transactions. In terms of product direction, Coinbase recently reversed a rebranding decision. The product had been renamed “Base App” in July 2025 as part of a social and trading experiment, but in September 2026, Coinbase restored the Coinbase Wallet name. The company acknowledged that the social features did not achieve expected adoption, and the focus has shifted back to trading and multi-chain access.
